Bay Area Community Foundation Funds

Bay Area Community Foundation hosts a wide variety of funds to benefit Bay and Arenac counties. Funds include scholarships, donor advised funds, designated and agency funds, field of interest funds, and unrestricted funds. We maintain more than 350 funds to support arts and culture, community initiatives, education and youth, environment, health and wellness, human services, and recreation. Albert O. and Lillian Rathke Educational ScholarshipLillian Brechtel Rathke and her husband, Albert, were committed to improving life for others. Lillian was a elementary and special education teacher. Her belief in the importance of education led her to establish this scholarship through her will. She passed away on June 9, 1985 at the age of 95. Amy J. Brennan Memorial ScholarshipAmy J. Brennan was an honor graduate from Garber High School, a Northwood University graduate, and a member of the Mensa Society. Amy passed away suddenly in 2007, and this scholarship was established in memory and honor of her life. Arenac County Farm Bureau Scholarship FundThe Arenac County Farm Bureau cares about the people of Arenac County, the future of its community and giving back. For many years, it has provided scholarships to Arenac County youth. Arenac County Scholarship FundWith seed funding from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, the Au Gres-Sims and Standish-Sterling Community school districts created this scholarship fund to recognize the achievement and potential of Arenac County high school seniors. Art and Helen (Miller) Nickless ScholarshipBoth raised in Bay City, Art and Helen Nickless were interested in the well-being of children and believed education was the key to unlocking the doors of the future. Thankful for their good fortune, Art and Helen wished to help those who otherwise would not be able to pursue a post-secondary education. Art Hopp Leadership ScholarshipThe Art Hopp Leadership Scholarship was established in memory of Art Hopp, who was the Chief of Police in Pinconning. Scholarships are available to Pinconning area seniors. Applicants must be involved in at least one school related extracurricular activity, and priority will be given to students who are also involved in at least one community service activity. Arthur H. Cansfield Educational ScholarshipThis scholarship honors the memory of Arthur H. Cansfield, best remembered as the first principal at T.L. Handy High School, serving from 1948 until 1963. Before that, Mr. Cansfield was a physical education instructor and coach at what was then known as Handy Junior High School. Ashley Smith Memorial ScholarshipCraig Smith established this scholarship in loving memory of his wife, Ashley Smith. A longtime teacher at Standish Elementary, Ashley understood the value and power of education. Auburn Jaycees Educational ScholarshipThe Auburn Jaycees is a community service organization comprised of men and women between the ages of 21 and 40. The Auburn chapter has been in existence since 1962. The Jaycees' purpose is to serve the community while developing management skills and individual growth for each member. Bay City - City Hall Maintenance and Restoration FundCity Hall was constructed in 1896 and is a renowned example of Richardson Architecture that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bay City Central High School Class of 1960The Bay City Central High School Class of 1960 established this fund to honor and celebrate the lives of their graduates. They want current graduates to embrace the bond they will share as alumni. While much has changed since the Class of 1960 was in school, they have much in common with graduating seniors. They sat in the same classrooms, walked the same halls, played sports, joined clubs, and studied many of the same subjects. Bay City Civitan/Marcella Barber ScholarshipA true Civitan, Marcella Barber was associated with the Bay City Civitan Club in various ways from its creation until the time of her death. Marcella lent a hand to the Club even before women were allowed to be members. Once women were accepted, she joined the organization and held various offices at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Fellow members described Marcella as having a heart of gold. Bay City Kiwanis Educational ScholarshipThe Bay City Kiwanis Club, a community service club chartered in January 1917, helps and supports many local projects for youth and the handicapped. Sample recipients include Boys and Girls Club, 4-H, Bay Area Family YMCA, Do-All Inc. American Red Cross, Disability Service Resource Center, Bay Arts Council, The Imagination Library, Style for Students, Salvation Army's Food Pantry, Toys for Tots, MY Lead (Michigan Youth Leadership program), and Community Beautification. Beth Pawlak ScholarshipThis scholarship was established in 1998 by family and friends to honor Beth, a bright, athletic twenty-year-old, who was killed in an automobile accident on February 1, 1998. Beth was a 1995 Bay City Central High School graduate and an active member of the school’s basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. At the time of her death, Beth was studying to be an elementary teacher at Central Michigan University and was a member of the women’s softball team and the National Honor Society. Brennan Family FundThis Donor Advised Fund allows those who create a fund to have ongoing involvement in the use of its designated programs. The donors work with our staff, identifying ways to use dollars from the Donor Advised Fund to address the issues and needs they care about most. Alvesteffer was a bright, energetic, outstanding young man, cherished by his family and friends and remembered for his kindness to anyone in need of help or encouragement. Brett strove for academic excellence, provided service to others, and always performed to the best of his ability. His passion for writing stories and poems was inspired by his love of family, friends, and nature. Brett was a true lover of life’s adventures and is sadly missed by all who knew him after his life was cut short at the age of twelve. Carol C. Noeske Arenac County Disability FundMs. Carol C. Noeske wished to support the Arenac County Blair Society for Crippled Children and Adults. The Society's original purpose was to support activities in the furtherance of and directed toward serving all needs of physically and mentally disabled persons, their families, and associates in Arenac County. Unfortunately the Society ceased operations around 1994. Cassidy Christie Memorial ScholarshipCassidy Christie, whose memory is honored with this scholarship, is remembered for her smile, bravery, incredible poise for someone so young, and her ability to make everyone else smile and feel good about themselves. At the age of ten, she was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer. Cassidy lost a fast, furious, and hard-fought battle with cancer just eleven months later. Christina M. Goyett Memorial Scholarship Christina “Chrissy” Goyett graduated from John Glenn High School in 2010 after having been on the girls swim team for all four years. At Bowling Green State University, she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and was very active in volunteering for Relay for Life, Autism Speaks, and leadership programs. She had decided to be an educator of children with autism just prior to an automobile accident that look the lives of Christina and two of her sorority sisters in March of 2012. She is remembered for her “Live, Laugh, Love” approach to life. Danette DeCorte and Emilee Prime Scholarship FundDanette and Emilee were two inspiring nineteen-year-olds who loved life and all it had to offer. Both graduated from Bay City Central High School in 2009 with honors and were members of Central’s basketball and volleyball teams. On February 26, 2011, Danette and Emilee were killed in a tragic car accident. At the time of their deaths, Danette was attending Saginaw Valley State University, and Emilee was attending Delta College. Emilee’s goal in life was to become a veterinarian, and Danette’s goal was to become a lawyer. Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #103, Jack Sebald ScholarshipJack Sebald, a fourteen-year employee and a member of the Bay City Fraternal Order of the Police, worked with the schools in Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), earned a Police Courageous Service Medal, two life-saving awards, and a Medal of Valor from the Bay City Fire Department. He was working with the Bay Area Community Foundation to set up this fund when he passed away in February of 1990 at the age of thirty-eight. In his honor, the fund was named for him. Frederick Kindinger Scholarship Frederick Lewis Kindinger, born in Cleveland, Ohio, was the oldest of six sons and three sisters and grew up during the Great Depression. He wanted to go to college after high school, but money wasn’t available. Fred first worked in a foundry and went on to work for Consumers Power as a meter reader, where he enjoyed his job until health issues caused his retirement in 1969. He was an intelligent, caring, thoughtful, and helpful person. Friends of the Pere Marquette Depot Designated FundLocated in the central business district on the east side of the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan, the Pere Marquette Railroad Depot is the original Bay City station of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad Company. As the city evolved from a lumber-based to a diversified, industrial-based economy at the turn-of-the-20th century, the railroad played a significant role in transporting Bay City manufactured products to market. Built in 1904, the depot remained active in service until 1969, at which time it was vacated and began a period marked by vandalism and progressive deterioration. The Great Lakes Center Foundation spearheaded the complete historic restoration (based on the U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service standards) in 2008. The depot is now the home of the Bay Area Community Foundation. The building was listed in the State Register of Historic Places in 1980 and the National Register in 1982. James C. LaPrairie Memorial ScholarshipJim was a Navy veteran who learned his trade in the military service and continued attending technical schools during the early years of his career. He joined Mid State Litho, Inc. in 1985 as a sales and service representative and continued technical and sales training during his twenty-five-year career with Mid State. Jim was diagnosed in April 2009 with stage IV adenocarcinoma. He fought valiantly but lost his battle on April 20, 2010, at the age of fifty-one. Education was extremely important to Jim. During his Naval service as well as his nearly thirty years in the printing industry, Jim continued his technical and service training. James T. Doyle ScholarshipJim Doyle dedicated his life to impacting the lives of children. He spent twenty-nine years in education working for the Bangor Township School District as a junior high teacher, a high school teacher, a sports coach, and eventually the director of athletics and recreation at John Glenn High School. The track and field complex at the school is named after him. He graduated from Olivet College in 1965 and received many awards during his lifetime, including Wrestling Official of the Year, Maria Shriver Award for his work with the Special Olympics, Allen W. Bush Award for commitment to the MHSAA, Region VIII Athletic Director of the Year, and recognition by the American Red Cross for 2,000 volunteer hours teaching first aid and CPR. Jeanine Laura Zelnis Memorial Educational ScholarshipLoving, caring, beautiful Jeanine was born in Bay City on April 24, 1953, and attended Bay City Central High School where she was elected Homecoming Queen of the class of 1971. She graduated from Delta College School of Nursing and then attended Michigan State University to earn her B.S. in nursing. She earned a Master of Science degree in nursing from Wayne State University and received recognition from Sigma Theta Tau Alpha Psi and Sigma Theta Tau Lambda nursing honor societies. Jeanine became a specialist in Gerontology by attending the University of Michigan and served as Assistant Professor of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Certified Clinical Specialist in Gerontology at Nazareth College until its closure. She was currently writing curriculum for the nursing department of Western Michigan University at the time of her death in 1995. Jeffrey D. Ballance Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1994 by the Ballance family and friends in Jeff's memory. Jeff attended Bay City Central High School and was a 1994 graduate. He played on Central's football team as a wide receiver. He was active in many sports activities, loved being outdoors, and especially loved downhill skiing. Jeff was the type of person to give of himself to the community, because he truly believed in people. He volunteered many hours to St. Mary's Medical Center of Saginaw and coached Bay City's elementary students in football and track.

Jeff was killed in an automobile accident on July 24, 1994, three weeks before leaving for Michigan Technological University, where he had signed a letter of intent to play football. He planned to study civil engineering. Jeff's goal was to become an expert in designing roadways and campus plans for corporations, universities, and hospitals. Jeff was an outstanding person who will always be missed by his family and friends.

Marion H. Whittaker Educational ScholarshipA longtime resident of Bay City, Marion H. Whittaker had many interests, read voraciously, was dedicated to education, and possessed a deep concern for Native American education. She was a member of the Women’s Army Corp during World War II, after which she graduated from and taught at the University of Detroit. After a seven-year stint teaching at University of Wisconsin, she worked for Delta College until retirement. During her tenure at Delta, she was active in the American Chemical Society, Science for the ‘80s and ‘90s, and Computers committees. In the early years of the Delta College Planetarium, Marion ran the programs and participated in Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, and the Tuscola Academic Games. Friends and family remember her as a “walking chemistry book” for her knowledge of obscure facts and theoretical concepts. Paul B. Grein ScholarshipPaul B. Grein was an educator and sports enthusiast. He taught in Bay City Public Schools from 1960 to 1989. In 1990, he began teaching in the Lifelong Wellness Department at Delta College, retiring in 2002. Phil and Whitey Jackson Memorial ScholarshipPhilomena Permoda Jackson and William Alan Jackson, both high school graduates of the Bay City Public School System and lifelong Bay City residents believed strongly in their community and in the value of education. Philomena worked at JC Penney, Dow Corning and retired from Michigan Bell. Always active in her community, Philomena was one of the originators and schedulers of Mobile Meals now known as Meals on Wheels. Alan affectionately known as Whitey, worked for a beer distributor, delivering a variety of brands to the TriCity Area. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Elk's Club. In addition, both were very active in the respective churches. By establishing the W. Alan and Philomena P. Jackson College Scholarship , with in the Bay Area Community Foundation , Phil and Whitey hoped it would help future generations to further their education while at the same time giving back to the community they loved so dearly.

To provide scholarship funds for students living in Bay County who attended Bay County high schools and go to Delta College or Saginaw Valley State University. The program at the Community Foundation known as "Bay Commitment" will be the first choice for funding and if the program is discontinued, funds will be distributed in the form of scholarships to students of Bay County as the Bay Area Community Foundation determines to be in accordance with the donor's wishes.

He touched every life he crossed paths with and always left an impression. His collegiate studies at Alma led to research projects from Mexico to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He enthusiastically toured many parts of the country on trips with friends, demonstrating his ever-adventurous spirit, which lives on in many memories. Trevor passed away on August 17, 2008 in a car accident at the young age of twenty-two. The Trevor D. Warren F. and Ruth P. Mandley Memorial Educational ScholarshipWarren F. Mandley and Ruth P. Mandley spent most of the sixty years of their married life in Bay City. Ruth suffered the loss of her mother when she was only four years old and felt this loss acutely. Even without a role model to guide and encourage her in her early years and young adulthood, Ruth became a loving wife and extraordinary mother. She was devoted to her husband, Warren, who was plagued by multiple health problems in his later years. Ruth loved and cared for her family up to the time of her death, from cancer, in July 1996. Warren was an outstanding father who supported his family of four children with hard work, faithfulness, and determination his whole life. He cherished his Irish heritage, enjoyed hunting and camping, and was owner of Mandley’s City Dairy on 22nd Street in Bay City for many years. He survived his wife by only seven months, having reached the age of 80. In memory of their affection and dedication as parents, this fund was established in 1996 by their son, Frank E.
