Bay Area Community Foundation Launches New Career & Technical Scholarship Program to Support Fast-Track Career Training
Bay City, MI – October 1, 2026 – The Bay Area Community Foundation (BACF) is proud to announce the launch of the Career & Technical Scholarship Program, a new funding opportunity designed to help residents gain the skills they need to enter high-demand careers quickly and affordably. The scholarship provides up to $2,000 for individuals pursuing post-secondary training programs that can be completed in one year or less.
This initiative supports a wide range of career pathways, including, but not limited to, truck driving, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), skilled trades, cosmetology, phlebotomy, and other short-term credential programs that lead directly to employment. Funding may be used to cover tuition, books, certification fees, required supplies, and essential materials.
“The Career & Technical Scholarship Program continues BACF’s commitment to ensure that every individual in our region has access to the post-secondary training they need to successfully navigate the path toward a rewarding career,” said Shawna Walraven, President & CEO of the Bay Area Community Foundation. “This program is the next step in our broader work to increase post-secondary education access throughout Bay County and the surrounding communities. We want to make sure that financial barriers don’t prevent someone from pursuing the education and training that can help them reach their career goals.”
Applicants must be 18 years or age or older, and eligible programs must be able to be completed in less than 12 months and improve the applicant’s employability.
“Many of these programs are not eligible for traditional financial aid, which adds an additional barrier for people attempting to obtain these certifications,” said Aaron Faist, Program Officer at the Bay Area Community Foundation. “These certifications can help change the financial landscape for families. The program helps further our goals of making sure a post-secondary education is obtainable to all residents of our region.”
BACF will work with Michigan Works! to develop partnerships with training organizations and establish an initial list of approved programs. The Foundation will also work with the Bay-Arenac Intermediate School District’s GED program to help develop a pipeline of potential applicants.
Applications are open now and accepted on a rolling basis through the Bay Area Community Foundation Scholarship Portal. Applicants will be required to provide documentation before scholarship funds are processed, including proof of a completed FAFSA, if applicable, proof of registration, and a copy of their program bill. Applicants may reapply if they have not received the maximum scholarship award.
Interested applicants can text “CTP” to (989) 260-5673 for more information and visit bayfoundation.org to create an account and apply through BACF’s scholarship portal. For questions about the Career & Technical Scholarship Program, contact Aaron Faist at aaronf@bayfoundation.org.
Celebrating College Month

The Launch of the Career & Technical Scholarship Program also kicks off BACF’s celebration of College Month throughout October. Throughout the month, BACF will share information and resources related to FAFSA, college access, scholarship opportunities, and post-secondary education pathways.
“As a community foundation, part of our role is making sure students and lifelong learners know that resources are available to them and have the information they need to take their next step,” said Nicole Horn, Donor Relations & Communications Officer at the Bay Area Community Foundation. “College and career planning can feel overwhelming, and sometimes knowing where to start is the biggest challenge. We want to help connect students and families with the resources, opportunities, and support that can help them move forward with confidence.”
Follow the Bay Area Community Foundation on social media throughout October for helpful information, reminders, and resources designed to help students and families navigate their options for education and career training.
