Bay Area Community Foundation Funds
Bay Area Community Foundation hosts a wide variety of funds to benefit Bay and Arenac counties. Funds include scholarships, donor advised funds, designated and agency funds, field of interest funds, and unrestricted funds. We maintain more than 350 funds to support arts and culture, community initiatives, education and youth, environment, health and wellness, human services, and recreation. Alan L. Bryant Leadership Scholarship | A thirty-eight-year employee of the Bay City Public Schools, Alan Bryant was respected and admired not only by his students, but also by their parents, the faculty, and his peers. Albert O. and Lillian Rathke Educational Scholarship | Lillian Brechtel Rathke and her husband, Albert, were committed to improving life for others. Lillian was a elementary and special education teacher. Her belief in the importance of education led her to establish this scholarship through her will. She passed away on June 9, 1985 at the age of 95. Alpha Delta Kappa - Alpha Pi/Fidelis Gamma Chapter Scholarship | Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary sorority organized to recognize and support the efforts of outstanding women educators who are actively engaged in teaching, administration, or a specialized field of the teaching profession. Their focus is to build fellowship, promote high standards of education, support educational and charitable projects, sponsor scholarships, and contribute to work, understanding, goodwill, and peace. Alzheimer's Fund | In 1993, this fund was established by Joan and Terry Dardas in honor of Joan's mother who suffered from Alzheimer's. Amy J. Brennan Memorial Scholarship | Amy J. Brennan was an honor graduate from Garber High School, a Northwood University graduate, and a member of the Mensa Society. Amy passed away suddenly in 2007, and this scholarship was established in memory and honor of her life. Each year, this fund awards $2,000 each up to 100 first-generation college students in Bay County pursuing a degree or certificate at either Saginaw Valley State University or Delta College. BaySail Designated Endowment Fund | BaySail provides unique sailing experiences and educational voyages aboard its schooners the Appledore IV and the Appledore V. Beth Pawlak Scholarship | This scholarship was established in 1998 by family and friends to honor Beth, a bright, athletic twenty-year-old, who was killed in an automobile accident on February 1, 1998. Beth was a 1995 Bay City Central High School graduate and an active member of the school’s basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. At the time of her death, Beth was studying to be an elementary teacher at Central Michigan University and was a member of the women’s softball team and the National Honor Society. Bob and Ann Brobst Memorial Educational Fund | Bob and Ann Brobst were both active members in the Harbor Beach Rotary Club and both Paul Harris fellows, working on many projects in the area of youth exchange. After their unexpected death in 1993 due to a car accident, the club established a fund in their name to honor their memory and dedication to Rotary. Bradley J. Johnson Educational Scholarship | This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Bradley James Johnson, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1992, two weeks before he would have graduated from Garber High School. Brennan Family Fund | This Donor Advised Fund allows those who create a fund to have ongoing involvement in the use of its designated programs. The donors work with our staff, identifying ways to use dollars from the Donor Advised Fund to address the issues and needs they care about most. Danette DeCorte and Emilee Prime Scholarship Fund | Danette and Emilee were two inspiring nineteen-year-olds who loved life and all it had to offer. Both graduated from Bay City Central High School in 2009 with honors and were members of Central’s basketball and volleyball teams. On February 26, 2011, Danette and Emilee were killed in a tragic car accident. At the time of their deaths, Danette was attending Saginaw Valley State University, and Emilee was attending Delta College. Emilee’s goal in life was to become a veterinarian, and Danette’s goal was to become a lawyer. James C. LaPrairie Memorial Scholarship | Jim was a Navy veteran who learned his trade in the military service and continued attending technical schools during the early years of his career. Jim was diagnosed in April 2009 with stage IV adenocarcinoma. He fought valiantly but lost his battle on April 20, 2010, at the age of fifty-one. Education was extremely important to Jim. During his Naval service as well as his nearly thirty years in the printing industry, Jim continued his technical and service training. He graduated from Olivet College in 1965 and received many awards during his lifetime, including Wrestling Official of the Year, Maria Shriver Award for his work with the Special Olympics, Allen W. Marion H. Whittaker Educational Scholarship | A longtime resident of Bay City, Marion H. Whittaker had many interests, read voraciously, was dedicated to education, and possessed a deep concern for Native American education. She was a member of the Women’s Army Corp during World War II, after which she graduated from and taught at the University of Detroit. After a seven-year stint teaching at University of Wisconsin, she worked for Delta College until retirement. During her tenure at Delta, she was active in the American Chemical Society, Science for the ‘80s and ‘90s, and Computers committees. In the early years of the Delta College Planetarium, Marion ran the programs and participated in Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, and the Tuscola Academic Games. Friends and family remember her as a “walking chemistry book” for her knowledge of obscure facts and theoretical concepts. Phil and Whitey Jackson Memorial Scholarship | Philomena Permoda Jackson and William Alan Jackson, both high school graduates of the Bay City Public School System and lifelong Bay City residents believed strongly in their community and in the value of education. Philomena worked at JC Penney, Dow Corning, and retired from Michigan Bell. Always active in her community, Philomena was one of the founders of Mobile Meals now known as Meals on Wheels. Alan, affectionately known as Whitey, worked for a beer distributor, delivering a variety of brands to the TriCity Area. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Elk's Club. In addition, both were very active in the respective churches. Rita Greve Fund for Art in Public Places | Rita Greve had always been artistic, starting with painting as a young child. But once she discovered the feeling of clay in her hands--soft, malleable, and ready to mold--her focus changed to sculpting. It was her way to connect directly with the arts, in a literal hands-on way. She loved to share her passion and to include signs with her sculptures that said, "Please DO touch." Warren F. and Ruth P. Mandley Memorial Educational Scholarship for Bay Commitment | Warren F. Mandley and Ruth P. Mandley spent most of the sixty years of their married life in Bay City. Ruth suffered the loss of her mother when she was only four years old and felt this loss acutely. Even without a role model to guide and encourage her in her early years and young adulthood, Ruth became a loving wife and extraordinary mother. She was devoted to her husband, Warren, who was plagued by multiple health problems in his later years. Ruth loved and cared for her family up to the time of her death, from cancer, in July 1996. Warren was an outstanding father who supported his family of four children with hard work, faithfulness, and determination his whole life. He cherished his Irish heritage, enjoyed hunting and camping, and was owner of Mandley’s City Dairy on 22nd Street in Bay City for many years. He survived his wife by only seven months, having reached the age of 80. In memory of their affection and dedication as parents, this fund was established in 1996 by their son, Frank E. SPARK: An Arts Mentorship Fund | The SPARK: Artistic Mentorship Program is an initiative to offer training and development in the performing arts to black, Indigenous, and students of color in the Great Lakes Bay region.
