Community Initiative

  • BACF’s Community Initiative and Youth Advisory Funds awarded grants to open a writing center available for free to the public in the Jack & Alice Wirt Public Library in Downtown Bay City.

  • Thanks to funding from Dow, Bay Area Community Foundation is able to offer $1,000 grants to youth groups in Bay and Arenac counties as a reward for volunteering and giving back to the community.

  • From closed offices and cancelled fundraising events to adaptive programming for the digital landscape, we know that our local nonprofits are feeling the effects of COVID-19 in varying ways, both big and small.   • Learn about three grants we awarded this year to Bay County projects that will make a lasting impression on our community by utilizing our unique natural water resources.

  • When Martin passed away last year, one of the ways Ruth chose to honor his memory and his legacy of generosity was by asking for gifts to Bay Area Community Foundation in lieu of flowers. This year, in response to the Garnett and Elmie Compeau Challenge, Ruth used these gifts to establish the Martin D. Jaffe, M.D. Fund, which will provide grant dollars to respond to Bay County’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities for years to come.

  • Last year, Bay Area Community Foundation’s Community Initiative Fund awarded a grant of $7,000 to The Legacy Center to help Bay County students with reading, writing, and spelling through an after-school, one-on-one tutoring program.

  • Responding to a need for a dog park in the Pinconning Community, the Northern Bay County Fund committee planned and fundraised to make it a reality.

  • With a grassroots, organic effort, dedicated volunteers in Arenac County are preserving the local history of Omer’s Ye Olde Courthouse far into the future..

  • Endowments secure the future of our community assets such as our Riverwalk/Railtrail system.

  • The Great Lakes One Water Partnership is seeking public input on preserving Lake Huron through stormwater management projects. Please fill out the survey by February 28 with your input.

  • Bay Area Community Foundation awarded a grant of $75,000 from the Healthy Living Fund to the City of Au Gres to build a splash pad at Harbor Park.

  • A $821 grant from the Animal Welfare Endowment Fund helped offset costs for the more than 90 dogs that have been vaccinated at the Humane Society of Bay County so far this year.
